Business Process Management

Business Process Management (BPM) is a software category whose definition is not entirely fixed right now.  Ranging from process management to full-blown process automation each vendor has a slightly different twist on what it means.

As it relates to some of the key compliance issues of the day, BPM software can help a company with it's ongoing compliance needs by automating business rules, enforcing controls through integration with other tools, or identify gaps in current processes.

Here's an article from CIO that goes into more depth.  It breaks BPM software into three sub-categories:

  • Monitoring Software - Tracks data through a workflow and provides reporting on process compliance
  • Workflow - automates a workflow
  • Enterprise Application Integration - helps connect processes between multiple applications
