I was contemplating my underused DVR the other day. I was thinking of getting one that I could control remotely since the biggest issue is setting it. But, as I thought about it, I think DVR's are a short term solution on the long term entertainment path. I think we should expect that all content will be available on demand straight from our content providers without the need to keep things locally. I don't want the hassle of determining what to record and when. I just want to be able to play whatever I want and wherever I want.
The 'wherever' aspect of the equation is also broken. I have Comcast cable and I can watch things on demand to my heart's content. However, if I want to watch on demand via the web, they want to charge me again.
I believe we will soon be able to watch almost anything we want almost anywhere we want. Buying DVRs is a short term solution and I am not real excited about.
