Thought of the Day - What was

75802-1423617-thumbnail.jpgThe reefs in Hawaii, well, off the touristy side of Oahu, are very different than those of the Caribbean.  I've not been diving elsewhere (well, Alaska) so it's hard to do a lot of comparisons.  The reefs I saw in Hawaii had a lot lower density of coral, and that was all hard coral.  No soft corals.  No anemones.  No whips, fans, etc.

I didn't get the sense that the reefs had died back in a major way.  There were not a lot of dead coral heads...just sparse growth.  I always wonder though when diving, what did these reefs look like 100 years ago...
