Thought of the Day - Wine in Vegas

75802-628932-thumbnail.jpgSo I spent some time in Vegas and of course had to avail myself of the local wine scene.

The pic is from a neat wine store '55 degrees' at Mandalay Bay which is run by the same people behind the  restaurant Aureole (aureolelv.com) which has a really cool 42' tall tower of wine.  You order your wine in this place with the help of wine list on a tablet PC...about 35,000 bottles in cellar....including tons of old, rare, amazing stuff.

The food at Aureole was amazing.  So was the wine...had an awesome Pinot Noir and then a very easy to drink Cab.  Both Californian.

Later in the week I found the 'Wine Cellar' at the Rio.  That casino isn't exactly my speed...a bit noisy (well, a LOT noisy)....so, after stumbling through the pounding music and the cheesy dancers...down into the basement and there lies a stone, vaulted ceiling, old school, amazing wine store/library/bar.  WOW.  They have a HUGE vertical of Chateau d'Yquem dating back to 1855 (inlcuding some gigantic bottles of desert wine....you either have to have a lot of friends or a serious sweet tooth/drinking problem for those).  I had a great flight of very nice cabs.  They even had Opus One and Insignia as part of a flight.

Vegas is pretty good for wine...
